Nursing Scholarships & Awards
For Students Completing Their Second Year of Study

Awarded in August to Second Year Students

Egoville Nursing Scholar ($8,500 - $10,000)

The Medical/Dental Staff of Brandywine Hospital has voted to establish a fund to provide an $8,500 scholarship each year to a student enrolling in his or her second year at the Brandywine School of Nursing. This fund is established in memory of Dr. Richard Egoville, former Medical Director of Brandywine Hospital and devoted physician to many. In each of the past two years, an additional $1,500 was added by either Dr. Egoville’s widow Barbara, or by the Foundation, to bring the full amount of the award to $10,000. The fund is housed at the Brandywine Health Foundation and will be awarded each year on August 1st, with funds used toward the student’s second year tuition and fees.

Application Process:

Interested students should submit a one to two page letter by July 1st before their second year of study begins, including their name, address and phone number. This letter should address the following criteria.

  1. Academic Excellence – The student should have at least a 3.0 GPA in his or her first year nursing courses.
  2. Community Commitment – The student must be from central and western Chester County and must be able to show a commitment to remain as a nurse in this community.
  3. Service to the Community - The student must provide evidence of commitment to charitable interests in Chester County.
  4. Financial Need – The student should show that, after all eligible grants have been exhausted, they are in need of the full amount being awarded and why.
  5. Professional Potential - The student should provide evidence that they have the greatest potential to exemplify the best in nursing leadership. Letters of reference, particularly from medical professionals, are welcome.

Attached to the application letter should be the student's latest transcript from the Brandywine School of Nursing, clinical evaluations, and any letters of reference the applicant wishes to include. Please send all materials to the attention of: Frances M. Sheehan, President and CEO, Brandywine Health Foundation, 50 South First Avenue, Coatesville, PA 19320.

The award will be announced to the student on August 1st for the upcoming academic year. The student’s status as the Egoville Nursing Scholar will also be announced at the student’s Graduation Ceremony.

Awarded in December to Second Year Students

Cardiac Rehab Scholarships (Four $1,000 scholarships)

The Cardiac Rehab Scholarship was established in 1993 by Roger Brown, Bill Keen and Louise DePedro, former patients at the Cardiac Rehab facility at Brandywine Hospital, in honor of the caring and concern demonstrated by the cardiac rehab nursing staff. Since then, existing and former patients at the Cardiac Rehab facility are asked to contribute to this fund in lieu of holiday gifts for the staff, so that nursing students can continue their studies regardless of economic circumstance.

The generosity of many current and former patients enables the foundation to award four $1,000 scholarships at the Cardiac Rehab facility’s Holiday Party each December.

Application Process:

Interested students should submit a one to two page letter by November 1st, including their name, address and phone number. This letter should address the following criteria.

  1. Academic Excellence – The student should have at least a 2.5 GPA in his or her first year of study, and should show evidence of being self-directed in seeking further learning opportunities.
  2. Clinical Competence – The student demonstrates consistent exceptional clinical performance in the care of clients.
  3. Communication Skills – The student develops and maintains rapport with members of the health team so that communication is constructive and effective.
  4. Caring and Concern – The student shows consistent evidence of sensitivity to the needs of his/her patients.
  5. Financial Need – The student should show why he/she is in need of the full amount being awarded, after all eligible grants have been exhausted.
