Nursing Scholarships
& Awards
The Martha and Duane Bohlayer Scholarship
Established by family and friends in 2007, the Martha and
Duane Bohlayer Scholarship is awarded annually to a student
of the Practical Nursing Program at CAT-Brandywine who exhibits
financial need and exemplifies the qualities of compassion
and dedication to the welfare of others, a principal guide
in the lives of those it honors.
Martha taught in, and later directed the practical nursing
program at CAT for many years, retiring in 1986. She championed
each of her students, and found ways to provide single parents
with extra encouragement. All of her students believed they
were her favorite, and most thought of themselves as her "all-time" favorite.
Duane tirelessly provided help to those in need from all walks
of life - frequently without being asked, and always without
financial compensation.
Martha and Duane consistently and humbly still go about the
business of providing others with what they think is needed,
and always leave people smiling and feeling better about themselves
and life. This scholarship is offered to help continue to spread
the living legacy of Martha and Duane Bohlayer and their humanity
and should be given to students who will be good stewards of
these ideals.
Purpose of the Fund:
The purpose of the fund is to provide annual awards to full-
or part-time students at the CAT-Brandywine School of Practical
Nursing based upon the following non-discriminatory criteria: completion
of at least Level I by April 1, 2008, financial need, and compassion
and dedication to the welfare of others. CAT-Brandywine School
of Practical Nursing faculty and staff shall nominate the person(s)
for this award based on these criteria with the preference
for choosing a single parent student, the kind that Martha
personally identified with and sought to motivate.
Process:
Interested students may submit a letter
of application by April 1st indicating why they should receive consideration
for a particular scholarship or award, to the attention of
Patty Knecht, Director, CAT-Brandywine Practical Nursing Program,
who will work with faculty and Frances M. Sheehan, President
and CEO of the Brandywine Health Foundation, to select the
scholarship finalist.
A student may receive more than one award and awards should
not be given if no one particular student qualifies.
The scholarship award recipient will receive notice of her
or his award by the end of April, and will be invited to an
award breakfast reception scheduled this year for May 8th.
The award is a $450 credit to the student’s tuition at
the CAT-Brandywine School of Nursing.
