Brandywine Health Foundation Announces Grants to City of Coatesville
and CYI Summer ServiceCorps Program
COATESVILLE – The Brandywine Health Foundation recently
announced grants totaling $124,000, bringing the Foundation’s
total giving since it started awarding grants in 2002 to $8.3
million.
The Brandywine Health Foundation will provide the City
of Coatesville with a grant of $20,000 to enable the opening
of the Ash Park Pool in the summer of 2010, with lifeguard
coverage and the provision of swimming lessons.
In addition,
$111,000 will fund a Coatesville Youth Initiative Summer ServiceCorps
program for students in the Coatesville Area School District.
Over the summer, thirty low to moderate income teenagers between
the ages of 14-18 will gain meaningful service learning opportunities,
transferable life and work-readiness skills, while contributing
to the development of their community.
According to Chaya Scott,
Director of the Coatesville Youth Initiative, “This is
a life-changing opportunity for young people to engage in direct
service and capacity building activities to assess and address
the unmet needs in their community. Through rigorous leadership
development training, community building activities, team service
project(s), and extensive life and academic skill-building
seminars, young people will be inspired and poised to carry
the Coatesville community toward a positive future.”
Thomas J. Belmont, Jr., foundation board chair, commented, “We
are especially proud that in addition to the staff time we
have put into building the Coatesville Youth Initiative, we
will provide direct funding as a concrete investment in this
valuable summer program. We look forward to making a dramatic
difference in the future course of young people in the greater
Coatesville area. In addition, we are pleased to partner with
the City of Coatesville and other agencies to insure that the
children and families of the City will have a safe, well maintained
pool to cool off at during the hot summer months. We believe
our investment in the pool and the employment of young lifeguards
is important at a time when job opportunities are so needed
and there are great opportunities for these young people to
share their talents in teaching swimming to young and old within
our community, so all can have a safe and enjoyable summer.”
