More than 400 neighbors attended the
second annual Block Party on Saturday, July 25, participating
in free, healthy and fun activities! Children and adults enjoyed:
health screenings including dental health, blood pressure, cardiac,
skin cancer, blood sugar, anemia, stress, and spine assessments;
free mammograms for Keystone Mercy members; dozens of exhibitors
with health and social services information; a teddy bear clinic
for children to learn how to “heal” their free teddy
bear, sponsored by the Brandywine Hospital; face painting, the
YMCA Acti-Van and an ambulance demonstration; fitness demos,
dance lessons (Salsa & Hip Hop, Line Dancing); music, entertainment
and contests; and free ice cream, pretzels and healthy snacks! |
A
very special “Un-Sung Heroes” Awards ceremony
was held to recognize numerous groups and corporations, who
directly impacted the “healing” of the Coatesville
community after the winter arsons. Leaders from the American
Red Cross, Arcelor Mittal, Building Bridges, Citadel, City
of Coatesville, CYWA, Community Development, Crime Victims,
Holiday Inn (Exton), Ministerial Alliance and the United Way
of Chester County were recognized for their outstanding generosity
and the key role they played in unifying the spirit in the
Coatesville community.
Dozens of staff working for the top quality
agencies in the building – ChesPenn Health Services,
Community Dental, Child Guidance Resource Centers, and Human
Services volunteered at the event, alongside the many volunteers
from Coatesville and the surrounding communities. Young people
hustled to set up tables, tents and chairs, senior citizens
living in the building registered those in attendance, relatives
and friends of staff led hip hop and salsa lessons and a variety
of non-profits like Coatesville Bike Works, Domestic Violence
Center of Chester County and others distributed valuable information
and materials. While many of the visitors were there to learn
how they can better access regular dental, primary and behavioral
health services for their families, there were many children
whose screenings that day showed that they had never been to
a dentist, were not getting regular medical care, and for whom
behavioral health issues in their families were impacting their
ability to manage other critical health problems.
The Brandywine Center’s mission is to be the access
bridge to affordable, quality healthcare services for children
and families, building a healthier community for the residents
of Coatesville and the region. The Brandywine Center is home
to four healthcare providers dedicated to providing quality,
affordable, convenient services to the uninsured and underinsured
of our community. Their family of providers include: ChesPenn
Health Services, Chester County Community Dental Center, Child
Guidance Resource Centers and Human Services Inc. For more
