The
Foundation's History
In March of 2001, the Brandywine Health Foundation was officially
approved by Chester County Orphan’s Court as the recipient
of the non-profit assets from the sale of Brandywine Hospital
to Community Health Systems, Inc. On May 31, 2001, the foundation
was formed with approximately $19 million in assets, which
has grown to just under $30 million through investments, charitable
donations, and additional contributions from the BHS Transitional
Corporation, which holds the remaining assets and liabilities
from the original Brandywine Hospital. As BHS winds up all
outstanding legal matters and property sales, approximately
an additional $5 million will come to the foundation during
the next three to five years.
During the foundation’s first year, the original board
members concentrated on recruiting additional experienced board
members, learning about the role other “hospital conversion
foundations” have played in their communities, and conducting
a search for a permanent CEO. The foundation formally began
the grantmaking process by hiring the Philadelphia Health Management
Corporation to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment of
the health gaps in central and western Chester County. Hired
in September of 2002, PHMC completed their study in December
and presented it to the board in January, 2003. This study,
focused primarily on the number of uninsured as well as racial
and ethnic disparities in health care, has served as the guide
for the foundation’s grantmaking since then. Click

In its seven years of grantmaking to date, the foundation
has provided over $7 million in grants to non-profits improving
the health of the greater Coatesville area. The largest grant
of $1 million was to open a Federally Qualified Health Center
in the City of Coatesville - ChesPenn
Health Services . The
foundation has also assisted in the start-up of Community
Dental in Coatesville, bringing the Child
Guidance Resource Center's behavioral
health services to all of the Coatesville Area School District’s
schools and supporting the Maternal and Child Health Consortium’s
Insurance Outreach Program. |
