Major Accomplishments:
Bringing
ChesPenn Health Services to Coatesville, the only Federally
Qualified Health Center in Chester County, now providing
over 8,000 patient visits to low income residents throughout
Chester County, including pediatric services, prenatal care,
and management of chronic diseases. The foundation provided
an initial grant of $1 million for three years, is now into
a five year $2 million grant period, and has introduced ChesPenn
to numerous other foundations, businesses and individuals
now supporting their efforts as well.
Assisting in the development
of a new Dental Center, Chester County Community Dental,
and partnering with the Chester County Department of Mental
Health and Mental Retardation, as well as the Coatesville
Area School District to bring behavioral health services
to Coatesville, Child Guidance Resource Centers.
Building
these agencies a permanent home, the Brandywine Center, at
744 East Lincoln Highway in Coatesville. With funding from
a varied combination of public and private sources, the building
is owned by a limited partnership created by the foundation,
which has taken on 100% of the financial risk. It houses
the four non-profit organizations: ChesPenn Health Services,
Chester County Community Dental, Child Guidance Resource
Centers and Human Services Inc., and has 24 units of affordable
senior housing. This $13 million, four-story Center, which
opened in April 2008, represents the first major construction
in the heart of Coatesville in over thirty years; it is a
once-in-a-generation opportunity to positively impact the
health of those living in this promising but struggling community
in a very concrete way. Many generous individuals, foundations,
and businesses helped to accomplish several goals through
this innovative project:
- Improving the healthcare of the residents
of the greater Coatesville area;
- Increasing the availability
of affordable housing for low income seniors in the area;
and
- Aiding in the economic development of the City
of Coatesville.

Launching the Coatesville
Youth Initiative: Recognizing that the foundation’s
efforts to improve the health of young people in the
Coatesville area required more than providing medical
services, the foundation raised the funds and led a year-long
community planning effort after community members requested
that the foundation step forward to address what many
viewed as a deteriorating set of circumstances for young
people ages 12-24 in Coatesville. The CYI is a coordinated
four pronged approach to help young people prepare for
a productive adulthood by:
- Helping youth get to high school
graduation with a plan;
- Developing mentoring relationships with adults;
and
- Strengthening the network of out-of-school time
programming.
- Establishing a Juvenile Justice Collaborative
to divert young people at risk of becoming engaged in
the juvenile justice system, and helping those already
in the system to successfully reintegrate into school
and community.
You Can Get Involved:
- Join the CYI Steering Committee or one
of the Working Groups;
- Become a mentor for a young person;
- Provide volunteer, internship,
or job shadowing opportunities;
- Facilitate a Youth Leadership
Workshop;
- Provide workshops materials for the Youth Leadership
Workshops;
- Funding opportunities; and In-kind support

What We Do
The Brandywine Health Foundation brings people, organizations
and resources together to improve the health and health care
of all people in the greater Coatesville area. We partner with
non-profit organizations, individuals, businesses, government
leaders and other foundations to find solutions to critical
health issues.
Our primary focus is to provide grants and to
serve as a resource to non-profit organizations working to
improve access to healthcare, dental health, prescription coverage,
and mental health services to the uninsured and under-insured.
Other priority funding areas include nursing
scholarships and
injury-prevention services. |
